Vernon is the home of Vermont Yankee, Vermont's only nuclear power plant.The town was originally part of Hinsdale, New Hampshire, but upon becoming a part of Vermont, Vermont's lieutenant governor at that time, Jonathan Hunt changed the name to Vernon. The name was reportedly suggested by his wife, which makes Vernon the only town in Vermont to have been named by a woman.
