Clay is a recently formed incorporated city in northeastern Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. Local government is run by a mayor and city council. Before incorporation on June 6, 2000, it was a census-designated place (CDP). The population was 4,947 at the 2000 census.Since incorporation, the city has increased its population by annexing residential subdivisions and the large community of Chalkville. City leaders now estimate the population of Clay to be over 10,000.[citation needed]
